VHF Antennas - 1

The picture above shows our new VHF / UHF antennas system that sits around 60ft above ground level. This comprises a pair of 10 element 2m LFA Yagis, a 70cm LFA and a 67 element 23cms Yagi. This is producing quite amazing results. On 2m we can run full UK power and on 70cms we can run 75W. The current power capability on 23cms is 10W. All three antennas are fitted with SSB Electronics mast head pre-amps and the entire array is on a short tower on the top of our building. The callsign we normally use is G0PEP and we often sit on 144.300MHz monitoring in the showroom.

Here in our new expanded demo facility in Hockley, we have the UK’s best ham dealer antenna system in the UK. Today the opening on 6m spread up to 4m and so we took advantage of it to try out some QRP operation. And who better to do this than Justin G0KSC.

We were hoping to receive the new K3S transceiver in time for our Open Day last Sunday. It got stuck in Customs!! Yesterday it arrived, better late than never!

It looks and sounds great so here is a video that we made so that customers can get a feel for this new radio and some idea of what the changes are.

Mast Head Pre-Amplifiers   May 26th, 2015

During the recent changes to our Ham Radio store, we installed some new antennas manufactured by InnovAntennas. Because these antennas are located above the roof of a 3 storey building, there are significant cable lengths. Because of this, we have installed mast head pre-amplifiers on the 2m, 70cm and 23cm arrays. During tests it became clear how important these pre-amps were and this short video tells the story.

On Sunday 24th May we held our annual Open Day at Hockley. This was also the first chance for visitors to see the new large store layout devoted entirely to ham radio. We now have the largest store in the UK devoted to the hobby and a very much expanded demonstration area. We also have the largest antenna facility of any ham radio shop in the UK.

To get a taste of our Open day, then watch the video below.

Flexx installation

This morning we have been installing the FlexRadio SDR system. We are using high definition screens and high spec PCs so that we can demonstrate just how good the performance can be. SDR has now established itself, and W&S were the first to bring SDR to the market place here in the UK. So if you are interested in learning more about SDR or want to try it out, you know where to come.

Will It or Won’t It? K3S   May 21st, 2015

Our demonstration K3S is in the hands of UPS on its jouney from the USA. The question is, will it arrive in time for our Open Day on Sunday?

The K3S has certainly produced a lot of interest and we already have a number of firm sales. At present we are expecting K3S supplies to reach us somewhere around the third week in June. But in the meantime we are holding our breath regarding the UK arrival of the very first K3S. Peter G3OJV.

Work is progressing with the new showroom area. The area above is going to be part of the multi-Station demonstration and display area. Hopefully if the weather keeps fine, we can make some more progress on the antenna side. Next antenna job is large Yagis for 2m, 70cm and 23cm.
